Is Your Bed Making You Sick?

When you go to bed, it is meant to be a time of rest and recovery.  As you sleep, your memory recovers and you are supposed to wake up feeling refreshed and revitalised. Right?

Well, some of the time.

There are many causes for restless sleep or waking up feeling lousy but have you considered that your mattress may be the problem?

Let me explain...

Inside your mattress are millions of dust mites chewing away at your dead flakes of skin embedded deep in your mattress. Dust mites are, in themselves harmless microscopic spiders that love warm, dark and humid environments. They are quite at home in the Brisbane climate in fact. Dust mites do not bite. As they are microscopic, you don't really feel them crawling on your skin. The real issue is in their excretion.

The waste that dust mites excrete is potent. The dust mite poo is the most potent indoor biological allergen known to man. For more information on the dust mite, click here.

Other than the mattress, dust mites live in carpets, stuffed toys and other soft furnishings. Your mattress however is their favoured dwelling due to the perfect humid conditions particularly in Brisbane, Redcliffe and Redland City.

As you sleep, you ex-foliate and when you turn in bed, you 'grind' the skin flakes into the mattress. A certain amount of the allergens become airborne and settle on your skin or in your nasal passages as you breath deeply. These allergens are a powerful trigger for asthma, hay fever, sinusitis attacks and skin disorders such as eczema.

The Mattress Makeover  mattress cleaning system is free of water or steam ensuring a mould free solution. We deep clean and sanitise your mattress to kill and remove the bacteria, viruses, dust mites, allergens, mould and bodily fluid residue so your sleep is as sound and allergy free as possible.

Holiday Accommodation

Mattress Cleaning is Essential for Allergy Sufferers
When you are planning a long-awaited holiday, no matter where, you must plan very carefully.

Once you know where to spend your dream time, choose your accommodation with great attention to detail. Look up web sites like tripadvisor.com.au for customer feedback. This is worth a bundle because you don't want bad accommodation to spoil an otherwise well planned holiday. Remember, some people are knit pickers and will never be pleased so read enough comments to get a big picture of locations.

There is one aspect of hotel accommodation I want to address. Allergy Friendliness. How allergy friendly is your choice of accommodation? How much care does that hotel take to ensure they are upholding their duty of care responsibilities?

Sure, they vacuum the carpets and mop the floors. Great, they place that mandatory "For Your Protection" piece of paper across the toilet seat. That's reassuring to think we are protected by a narrow strip of paper advertising a toilet cleaner!

Is the hotel offering a written guarantee that they have their mattresses deep cleaned, sanitised and deodorised at least every 12 months? Given that you book accommodation primarily to use the bed for sleeping, you could be surprised that most hotels don't have their beds professionally serviced to remove potent allergens from dust mites etc.

It might be comfortable, but is it clean? Is it infested with dust mite faeces, dead human skin, human hair, bodily fluid residue or mould? How about bacteria or viruses?

Take this advise, ask for a sleep healthy certificate when you book for your own peace of mind.

Dust mites can bring harm

Public awareness is increasing of the harm the faeces excreted from dust mites can trigger harmful respiratory conditions including Asthma.

Dust mites are found throughout the household, hotels & motels. As a result of this, the allergens are a proven cause of headaches, runny nose, itchy skin, and puffy eyes among sufferers of asthma, rhinitis, related respiratory problems, and eczema.  The slightest movement by people or pets send these particles into the air you breathe to be inhaled or settle on the skin.  This is often the trigger for allergic reactions.
Here are some basic facts about these nasty microscopic spiders...
  • Dust Mites are the source of one of the most powerful biological allergens!
  • Dust Mites create household dust that many filtration systems miss;  allergens (faeces) measure 2 microns, and their dead carcasses measure 250 microns.
  • Doctors believe that dust is one of the largest mediums of human infection.
  • Germs have no means of locomotion except to attach themselves to particles of dust.
  • The dust mites main food source of food is dead human dead skin flakes and animal dander.
  • 42,000 dust mites can live in only one ounce of dust. Over 18 kg of dust is generated per year in 140 m2 of space.  How big is your home?
  • Dust hosts 15 species of dust mites
  • It is estimated that you breathe in 2 heaping teaspoons of air particles per day, including dust
  • Bedrooms may well be where the largest population of dust mites reside
  • Dust problems increase due to heat, moisture, and humidity above 70%
  • Beds are a great humidity source due to body heat and perspiration
